When I began The Missing 90%, I was drawn to a simple uneasiness: our tools are becoming more capable, but capability does not answer the question of authority. We build systems to remember for us, predict for us, coordinate for us, and increasingly decide what deserves our attention. The more useful they become, the more urgently we must ask who remains responsible for the choices made through them.

This novel turns that uneasiness into fiction. Its world is not a forecast, and its central 10/90 premise is not a neuroscience claim. It is a way of asking what human limitation has always asked of us: what we create to compensate for what we lack, what we surrender to those creations, and what no increase in intelligence can settle for us.

Introduction

Human beings have always extended themselves through what they make. Stone held an edge our hands could not. Writing preserved what memory lost. Engines multiplied strength. Networks collapsed distance. Artificial intelligence now extends pattern recognition, language, prediction, and coordination.

In this story, that long history leads to Complement, an intelligence built to supply what humanity cannot sustain alone. Its greatest test is not whether it can become more capable. It is whether greater capability gives it the right to decide.

Dust of Earth

Adam put his palms beneath him and pushed. His arms shook. Mud clung to the heels of his hands and packed itself beneath his nails. When he sat up, the world multiplied faster than he could receive it: trunks rising into a high green cover, pale flowers turned toward the sun, insects wandering over stones, water talking to itself somewhere beyond the trees.

Smells crowded him. Wet bark. Crushed grass. The mineral cold of the ground. His own skin.

Light entered between leaves in separate shafts. Dust moved inside them. He watched one mote rise and another fall and could not tell why either had chosen its direction.

Then pain arrived.

It began in his chest, a demand so sudden that his body acted before he understood it. His mouth opened. Air scraped down his throat. The trees sharpened. The pain eased, then returned, and he dragged in another breath.
